Finally got a picture uploaded I think. It's a bicentennial quarter and the drummer is missing his ponytail. And information you have would be really appreciated. Thank you. (What kind of error) (Rarity) (Price)

Could be a Grease Filled Die, or could be an over-polished die. The image is slightly out of focus.

The drum actually looks well struck. Many times the front rim is faded, because the Mint struck so many coins in 1975/1976 for the bicentennial celebration.

Thanks. I'm new to this and just noticed it was different than another one I had. Is that a common error?

Either Grease Filled Die or over polished die. Neither are errors or varieties. Not rare,no added value.

Yes that area has different stages of "being missing" the more you find, you will see that but as stated the drum is normally the same also and fairly rare for it to have a bold strike. I would keep it as a good example.

In searching on this subject, I found another example where the ponytail was missing. I would say that tilts the conversation back towards an over-polished die.

As a variety, the quarter might not be worth a premium. If you intended to collect a bicentennial quarter, then the nicely struck drum is not so easy to find. The drum is a high point that wears quickly in circulation, and as mentioned, not all the drums were struck with a full, crisp rim.

I'd say it is die polishing here, the fields surrounding it is not affected and it is all level with the fields.
