Well I didn't see this news coming at all. Whitman has been purchased by CDN, aka "The Greysheet" dealer pricing newsletter. Following is an email John Feigenbaum sent out today. Much better news than finding out Whitman closed down for sure...

CDN-Acquries-Whitman-Publishing!

Dear Westcoin,

I have an exciting announcement to share with you. CDN Publishing is proud to announce the acquisition of Whitman Publishing. For the first time in numismatic history, these storied companies will combine forces to meet the demands and needs in the modern era of collectibles.

At CDN Publishing, we have been proud to foster some incredible brands including Greysheet, Greensheet, CPG, CDN Exchange, and, most recently, the Banknote Book. Since 1963, dealers and collectors throughout the industry have known and trusted these brands to deliver objective information from cataloging to pricing with printed and now modernized digital products. I am incredibly proud of our team members who have continually out-performed on a daily basis and enabled us to consider this massive growth opportunity.

Combining our company with the Whitman Publishing family of brands was a prospect made in heaven and that will open new doors. Whitman and their associated brands represent the best-in-class for the products in their categories. From the Guide Book of United States coins (the famous " Red Book") to their extensive line of supplies and albums and the tri-annual Whitman Expo held in Baltimore, Whitman's reach is incredibly wide and a perfect fit to our product offerings. Where CDN has its roots in the wholesale trade, Whitman has been a mainstay in the retail space, and we can cover the numismatic hobby from both sides of the coin.

In the weeks to come, we look forward to sharing more details and our greater vision. In the meantime I encourage you to visit the Whitman web site to see the hundreds of books and supplies available there, as well as an attractive inventory of collectible U.S. stamps under the H.E. Harris brand. (In celebration of this announcement, we are pleased to offer a 20% discount at the Whitman web site. Use code: GREYSHEET at checkout.)

You can read our official press release here, but if you have any questions, please shoot me an email at john@greysheet.com.

Sincerely,
John Feigenbaum,
CEO & President

Isn't John Feigenbaum associated with David Lawrence Rare Coins, or do I have this name mixed-up?

Will be fun to look back five years from now and see how things played out.

His Dad, was David Feigenbaum, aka David Lawrence. John has been a professional numismatist since 1979. He was formerly the president of David Lawrence Rare Coins, he took over when his father David passed away due to complications from ALS. John Brush teamed up with Dell Loy Hansen to purchase and run DLRC in 2014-2015.

John took on executive responsibilities for CDN Publishing in August 2015 officially. He has written for numerous trade publications and published "The Complete Guide to Washington quarters" in 1991. In 2014, John received the PNG Abe Kosoff Founders Award for "his steadfast dedication to the entire numismatic community."

In 2023 John also took over the role of Executive Director of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG).

So yes and no, he ran DLRC for awhile and worked there most of his life, until 2015 when he sold out to take on CDN Publishing. John also puts out a podcast, called "Both Sides of the Coin" worth a listen too.

Now we just need someone to acquire Dansco and solve their ever-present production issues.

I have made a similar suggestion a time or ten.

I thought it was amusing that the GreySheet CyberMonday email directed me not to greysheet.com but to Whitman where I could buy EVERYTHING except the GreySheet that was advertised in the email...

Isn't consolidation fun?

The redirect to Whitman's page had me thinking...

In 2003 H.E. Harris acquired Whitman and took the Whitman name. I wonder if CDN wants to do the same.

Some names have prestige...

AlliedSignal acquired Honeywell to become... Honeywell.

SBC acquired AT&T to become... AT&T

NationsBank acquired BankAmerica (f.k.a. Bank of America) to become... Bank of America.

Soon to become the Whitman Greysheet perhaps?

I just hope they do a better job with the publishing side. If you're a Barber enthusiast, the CPG 6th edition and the Barber Silver Coins 3rd edition are both disappointing.
