Probably the reverse is over polished as well on the columns? The die was polished so much that the mid area of the die devices were removed to cover a strong clash. It the reverse is free from polishing, then a new reverse may be replaced if the reverse die was to damaged to be fixed?

I think it;s just a greased filled die and took that area out. JAZEC

It seems that on LMC's the worst strikes I see regularly are 90's and 91's! I wonder why that is? Just like the hideous strikes on 1964 nickels. There must be a reason. Production numbers maybe?

Well, that is one worn/damaged die! Just look at IGWT. When they used to (over)polish dies, they would often break the bridge of Lincoln's nose--I seem to recall the 70s were particularly bad. Perhaps they've moved up to a more localized method? I do note a gradual weakness in Y of LIBERTY and the 1 of 1990. There's a few big polishing marks visible in the photos too.

The nose is a target area for the bottom edge of the Memorial base. The clash marks on the neck is probably what they were trying to removed and got a little over zealous in doing so.

Yeah, missing devices should always have the possibility of over polished dies taken into consideration. That's my guess anyway.

Hi,
The folks who say it is the result of an over abraded (polished) die are correct.

First time for me. I seen the back of the Neck missing and the throat area, but never both on the same coin.

Quote: Anyone ever seen one like it? Yes, they aren't that uncomon The neck area is the area of shallowest relief on the cent obv and is the first to disappear on an overpolished die. Of course this does depend some on which hub modification it is. On some of them the front of the vest was the shallowest and it would become detached first.

I've seen a lot of 90 year Lincoln cents with weak strikes, or possibly excessive die polishing. However, yours is the most extreme example I've yet seen. Nice, it would be a keeper if I found it for sure.
