It-Was-The-Summer-Of-'69!-1969-D-5c-Mint-Marks
Continuing with my budding interest in Denver mint marks, these are six nickels from my latest CRH batch. Eventually I am going to get around to that D mint mark graphic that I started.

Here is what I am reasonably confident about. There are at least two mid/late-1960s mint marks in Denver. The small coin mint mark is thicker, slightly curvy, and has minor serifs. The Kennedy half D mint mark appears taller, thinner, and doesn't really have serifs, just subtle points.

The images above were taken in a row with focus locked, identical zoom. Top left is what I would consider to be the Kennedy D. Top middle is what I would call a well formed example of the small coin D. Top right is that same mint mark, melted a bit by Die Deterioration. Bottom left seems to be either a freshly engraved punch, or just a light tap. Bottom middle and right appear to be what happens when someone really goes to town and hammers that punch as deeply as possible. You can see those are raised much further than the BL mark, almost level with the date numbers.

Definitely lots of variation in placement, angle, depth of punch. But I don't think there are any geometry gyrations that can make that tall, straight D fit the curvy wide D. My guess is that someone just picked up the wrong punch. Assuming they even regarded that as a wrong punch, since it made a perfectly shaped D and you can't visually tell the difference without a microscope.

It's pretty cool to see the different variations of positioning of the mint marks.
