I came across this 1877-CC Half Eagle which has been graded VF-20 by PCGS. To me, it looks pretty worn and beat up to get a VF-20 grade, but I only own one U.S. gold coin so I am certainly no expert in Carson City gold.

It is not my coin.

What do folks think about the grade?

Here is the reverse photo of the slab. I'm not sure if the hazy parts of the reverse are on the slab, but I'd guess so.

F15 in my book. could be the lighting but using these photos I see the a coin that looks to have been cleaned. the blotchy color in the fields are pointing to that for me. the reverse appears to have been a weaker strike

I am in the F range. I would pass as the coin appears over graded and hazy plastic on reverse.

I'd be at VG-10 on this one. Buy the coin, not the holder.

The coin within the plastic, is it varnished?

Certainly wouldn't appeal to me at any grade!

Thanks for all the responses. It doesn't look VF-20 to me.

Nice very nice. Very rare issue and one I would be proud to own. Last time I checked PCGS has plenty of expert experience grading gold and rumor control has it they know how to grade. VF-20 straight non details I like it.

They only made 8.6k. Unless you have a lot more money to spend on a nicer
one, it might be the hole filler you're looking for if the price is right.

Ps, when I get a Merc 16d or 42/41, they're probably going to look pretty lousy, but I'll be happy to have them.
