I recently purchased a small group of uncleaned Roman denarii which I have been cleaning.

Among them was this lovely Septimius Severus with an attractive black patina. The coin is silver (17 mm. and 2.94 grams), since there is clearly silver peeking out on the bust. I love how the obverse looks but am not as thrilled with the reverse.

I am simply asking for opinions. Should I leave the coin as is or clean it?

I would try an acetone bath for a couple of hours. Would not affect the patina, but might loosen the green areas (pvc?). That would be all I would attempt.

I say it's a fine looking coin as-is.

I would leave it as is. Any attempt to make it better might do the opposite.

Thanks for the acetone suggestion. I have it soaking in it right now.

The green looks adherent rather than sticky or chalky and is quite nice in my opinion. I personally would leave it just like this if it was my coin.

I'm interested to see if the acetone does anything so please post some "after" pics to this thread.

The surface seems a little strange to me. It would be good to see it after cleaning.

Cleaning can be tricky and have opposite effects, but I agree acetone won't hurt.
