One of the shocking things revealed in this video was that William Sheldon and Ted Naftzger stole large cents from the Clapp collection donated to the ANS and replaced the thefts with lower graded examples to cover their tracks. They doctored and made up pedigrees to conceal their theft and it took investigators years to discover the crimes. This certainly knocks down by a few pegs, the high regard I have held for Sheldon for his numismatic contributions.

It must have been kept very quiet because I hadn't heard of this incident which I find very troubling.

Sheldon was more famous as a psychologist for his theory of somatotype, which originated in eugenics, popular at the time. His work was later called a "dangerous piece of fascistic pseudoscience" and he was accused of falsifying data for his work Atlas of Men. His thefts from the ANS collection seem to fit in with this. Quite the character, to put it mildly.

One MAJOR thing...

Your title text says the American Numismatic Association. The ANA, headquartered in Colorado Springs, CO is a TOTALLY different organization than the American Numismatic Society (ANS), headquartered in New York, NY.

If you are a numismatist (vs a collector), you should be a member of both.

ANS: https://numismatics.org/ - "Founded in 1858 for the appreciation of numismatics."
