Would appreciate some thoughts on this recent acquisition. I'm not in total agreement with the slab grade.

This is the type of coin that I'd pay closer to straight-grade prices than details prices if it were in a cleaned holder because it's a great-looking coin despite the old cleaning.

AU-55 lightly cleaned. May straight grade lower depending on how nice the TPG is. Net AU-53 seems fair for this coin it is very appealing.

Thx all - here is the slab - straight at 50. I paid low XF price for what I felt was 55 or possibly 58. I get the appearance of a cleaning but I'm not convinced it was; coin in hand shows it more as disturbed toning/coloration. If it was cleaned it is old as some have stated. Maybe ANACS did net it down to 50, who knows.

if you look at this coins wear there is no way its an AU50 coin leading me to believe that they net graded the coin and put it in a straight holder since the cleaning was not harsh

Probably a net grade, I would detail the coin. Try using it as a toning experiment to make it more original looking.

panzaldi - what is your experience with TPGs regarding cutoff year on net grades? pre-1900 or so? I know trying to guess what a TPG will do is a crap shoot - and so many factors play into a net grade vs. details. But I'm also guessing if this coin was a 1942 Walking that it would have detailed.
