  Hello, dear colleagues! Please, this coin is supposed to be made of silver and an ancient helenistic tetradrachme. Its weight is almost 18g. but I don't like very much its appearance. I doubt. Is it genuine or a fake?! If real, can you identify it exactly?! What may be its value? Thank you very much!

@and, I think that you are correct to be concerned about this piece--to me, those look like casting bubbles on the rev. Can you please add a picture of the edge of this coin? Thx.

Thank you both but I don't understand LOUISVILLEKYSHOP: Finally, is this coin genuine or a copy/fake?
By the way, I have also a short video with the coin and its edge. Perhaps it may be of help but I don't know how to show it to you...

Well just a photo of the edge is fine for us. I don't have a direct reason to doubt the coin is real at this stage. But I would like 3 edge photos of different parts of the edge. Again, we don't need a video. And please let us know if you don't have the coin and this is not possible at this time. We understand if you are deciding to buy it or not. Because you are asking value, you might be thinking of what to pay for it. Also let us know the mm of the coin as well. To get our best opinion. On the reverse side, be sure to take a photo of the left and top of the coin on an angle as am I right there is indentations and thus missing silver? Especially above the head it looks like you can see to the center of the coin.

     Hi again! Dear friend "Louisvillekyshop" many thanks for your interest in helping me! Yes, as you supposed, a friend of mine wants to buy this coin from someone who says that he found it in the ground, on the country fields... So, my friend knows nothing about the coin's authenticity and its fair price to pay for it! The seller is willing about 100€... For a possible copy/fake, this is an enormous price! I have managed to obtain more photos as you asked, the diameter is around 32mm. & the weight a bit more than 17g. I'm waitting for your kind opinion & "verdict"! Edited by Andi10

Just to offer another opinion (you can't have a verdict from pictures alone), I will say that though there are doubts with such a poor surface (but I don't see casting bubbles), on balance I'd guess the coin was probably genuine. I would add though that the asking price is not great for that coin in that grade. It's not awful..but it's not a bargain. For example, you could probably find a piece for about the same price, with the same wear, that's tidier and fewer doubts

The coin is probably real, but if you paid 100 euros you'd not get that back selling it easily. Also, your friend should buy coins that they are researching from a time period or civilization that means something to them so they enjoy the coin. Not knowing anything about the coin, they are probably interested in resale and a profit and I don't see it at that price. In an open sale on ebay with the issues, it will sell for $63.50 perhaps. Just a guess of course. |

Ok thx for adding those edge shots. It could just be porosity on that first picture rather than evidence of a casting.

Looks like a really, really junk alloy, almost reminds me of plating over a base metal.
If it's real, it has too many problems to be worth purchasing. Bent, heavily damaged, very definitely abused when trying to clean it, heavily corroded (porous) and also has a flan crack.
Unless this is a super rare type, I wouldn't bother. I think 100 euros is probably 80-90 euros too much.
