Saw this coin recently and thought it was worth consideration. I think obverse is a solid AU55 at least. What is odd is that the reverse looks no better than a EF45 to me. The strawberries at reverse 11 and 1 show absolutely no detail. I like the reverse rim Cuds. What do you all think?

Very odd, Blastenpene. Reverse rim looks strange too. This might be one to avoid.

I'm OK with the rim Cuds, but the wear on the reverse doesn't seem to match the obverse (which is very nice, detail is very strong). Can't figure the color either. What's bad is that I really want the large letters...

Frankly, to me the two coins look reasonably comparable. I already have an 1858 small letters, but I thought this one was worth a look. What would you give for it is the operative question?

So here's a split screen between the 1858 small letters I already own (thinking mid range AU) and the other coin. Detail in the leaves is weak on the new coin as is detail on the strawberries. Kind of scratching my head as the obverse looks solid.

Love the Cuds. Color is a giant ? mark.

AU55 sharpness.

I'll say AU details (rim bumps).

Looks like a small bump on the reverse at 1, but I think the rest are small rim Cuds. To me, if anything would detail it, it would be the color, as paralyse mentioned. I'm bidding, so I guess we'll see. If it passes my limit, I'm out. If I get it, I'll post pictures. Be interesting to see in hand. I still think the obverse is a solid AU58, it's the reverse that pulls it down a bit.

So, Errers, just curious as to why, other than color, you might details this coin. You think those are rim dings on the reverse? I don't see any way that is damage - looks like Cuds around the rim to me - I think they are a good thing, and interesting. If you think I'm off base, tell me why. Just trying to learn something here, and thanks.

I do see the Rim Cuds, but I can also see some rim bumps too. I could be wrong.

I saw "1858 Fe Cent" and thought it meant it was made of iron. Ah, the foibles of the title capitalization automation.

My first reaction was that it is not authentic. By no means an expert, but the obverse strike is much nicer than average and the reverse much worse. Color, rims, strike = avoid to me.

not a fan of the color. original toning? not 100% certain. as for the rims not all that you see are Cuds

low MS would not surprise me...MS60. straight grade? maybe 40% chance

I see no luster on a strongly struck coin. AU-50/53.
