Another wonderful upgrade @mar! My recollection is that these city gate issues are pretty common in lower grades--is that right?

Ok yes that is what I was thinking. I just found my city gate that I spent only $5 on back in 1999!

The equivalent of 'MS' in ancient coins:
As Struck (AS).
Impossible to get these without a patina, after 1,700 years.

I have a collection of about 250 ancient coins, covering all ancient cultures.
Only two of them are near the condition of MartiVitori's coin.

A bit of a cartoonish portrait of that second coin - especially compared to the extremely realistic portrait on the first one!
Definitely in way better condition though.

...Seriously that portrait on the first coin is ridiculously good, especially compared to the normal stuff from that period. I didn't think portraits on 4th century bronze could get this nice - though admittedly I hadn't looked at much of it lately.
I wonder if circusmax120 would see this thread - the first coin here feels worthy of his collection. Perhaps it will be there some day?

(I could swear I've posted my response yesterday, but apparently not - and there isn't a tab for it either, so I must have somehow closed without looking. I've expanded it, though.)

Has the fat-head Siscia Balkan look.

I love it, it's got amazing detail, fully struck up, nice patina. The original one is not shabby by any means, though.

Camp-gate reverses are common, yes, but then again, that reverse was used for a long time. I still like them better than the ubiquitous "emperor with captive(s)" and "soldier spearing fallen horseman" reverses that came later.

That is a really superb upgrade. It will be difficult to beat that one in terms of condition.

I bought a small collection of Arles campgates a few years back. I find it interesting to see the standard campgate and the "open doors" campgates side by side.

That is an absolutely gorgeous campgate MV! All your upgrades you've posted here are great but this one is stellar.

Thanks all...yeah, this coin has got to be the highest grade example of any ancient I have ever owned.

January, you mentioned someone might be interested in the first one. They can pm me if they are interested in buying it. It is actually a rare variant but with these campgates, that doesn't really add any value.
