I have zero experience with ancient coins, but I ran across one this weekend that I was curious about. It is listed by a plate or page in a book described as "Pieper". He seems to be a fellow who wrote books on ancient Indian and Asian coins. I searched Numista, and although it has other coins and images from those books, it did not have the ebay coin in question.

Does anyone know a different or better site to try, or just outright own the book?

Wilfried Pieper has authored several books on Indian coins. I don't know whether a single numbering system is used or not. I wouldn't waste my time with Numista, however. It's not very useful for early coins. The database of record for Indian and other oriental coins is https://zeno.ru/

@brand, can you please post a link to the auction? Maybe we can help you with the attribution.

I checked Zeno as advised. They had many similar coins, but not this particular one.

In my opinion it's not possible to attribute the ebay coin from the photos. Here is an example of Pieper 581 at auction, indeed the "Pieper 581", the plate specimen from the author's collection. https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=l...4108&lot=801

Thanks, Kushanshah. I agree, that cannot possibly be the same style of coin. I am a total novice at ancient coins, so is there another way to interpret the notation P.581?

I might have arrived at Pieper myself while I was trying to research the coin. Perhaps I steered us in the wrong direction from the start.
