If I do the "Spence squint" I'm thinking the reverse is a PRINCIPIA IVVENTVTIS, Mars standing to left, holding spear and leaning on shield; C-S across fields.
But the obverse has me stumped. I thought it may be a Crispus, but I can't find one with the pearl diadem.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

I can't find anything with shield to the left like this on Tesorillo that isn't type 161, so we have to assume it's that even if I can't quite make it match the legend traces at 10h on the reverse (where I want to read REI for something like REI-PVBLICAE).

The letters IV at 2h are some of the clearest parts of the obverse legend. This can be Constantius, Licinius, or part of something like IVN NOB CAES, but it's definitely not Crispus. It looks like Constantius (I or II) didn't issue that type, anyway.

...TBH I'm scrambling at options to make this clearly-late portrait not date to the 310s. I don't think those lines of dots could possibly be this early.
(Oh, it's a pearl diadem. Still looks far too late.)

checks the list of reverses by legend for something like SPES REI-PVBLICAE in hopes there's anything that even slightly matches this coin
...Oh.
Type 117, issued 357-363. This legend can't be Julian, so it has to be Constantius II.

Unfortunately I can't ID it any further, and I'm not sure if anyone could without trying to figure out the mint by style. I don't see any reverse field marks; the apparent dot at 9h is part of the design (the line connecting it to the emperor's body is very faint on the picture).

Thanks @J1M ( ...from now on I'm going to refer to you as Jim)
Some very good detection skills displayed by you.
I think definitely something along the lines of https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=9912996
but with some differences.
Anyway, that is close enough for me to give it some attribution at least.
This was a $2.00 coin in a batch of 10, and the reverse was just showing a faint partial body running vertically, with no legend visible, no spear or helmet. The obverse is untouched, by me anyway. It has been interesting to pick away at the sands to expose what I could, but I should really get some proper coin cleaning implements. I am using a stainless steel dental pick which is not ideal and is doing some damage. For now I have dropped it into a jar with some olive oil and I'll let it soak for a while before attempting anymore removal. Having said that, I don't actually mind the look of it as it is now, almost ghostly.
I ramble on, sorry. One too many red wines!

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated
Grant
