Looks like the engraver came back and did a little 'repair" work on a worn die. The channeling is evident on the entire Mr. Lincoln. Also note the second rim inside the outside rim. It's not like a normal Ridge Ring that I've seen in the past. Never a dull moment when looking at these wheat cents. Thanks for looking..

Very nice! I'm always happy to see these, especially when you can so easily identify the end/beginning of rhe engraving. In this case, you can see where the engraver "buried" the tool just below the lower lip. Not sure why he did that but it's very interesting. Almost no enhancement was done right around the mouth. I bet it would look weird if it was done there.

Keep in mind though that this work is done on a hub, not on a die. The engraver used a tiny, round-headed burnishing tool to impress an incuse groove around the features to enhance their appearance. The die would have that feature in relief, and then it is incuse again on struck coins.

The scratch near the rim is probably a die polishing scratch. It is raised so would have happened on the die, not the hub.

Thanks .. I always welcome the input. One of these days I/m going to get this die/hub determination right. There is a wealth of knowledge being offered on this site and I deeply appreciate it.

This kind of re-work of the Hub is present on many denomination. I never know is name re-chalenning. The quarters present this frequently for the coins till 1972. Me I thinking before must be a form of the Hub doublling.

In one of my posts here I ask for oppinion on this for a Quarter variety and the consensus answer was one of the forms of MD.

Thanks to brink this topic UP for clarification.
