As title implies toning or something else? Great eye appeal, hard to think environmental staining.

Environmental toning/stain. Might have been a cup holder coin.

Something reacting with the metal.
Environmentally.

Yes, we all agree a reaction of some sort. Is there a generally accepted distinction between toning and staining? To my totally non-expert intuition, if it were a cup holder coin, I would be more inclined to expect to see perhaps one side of the coin (maybe) affected with some splotchiness appearance due to some kind of liquid staining. Toning on the other hand seems harder to pin down, as who knows what kind of localized gases could be swirling around a coin at any given point and duration of time.

There are many chemicals that will produce artificial toning on coins - and the majority are not gaseous. Have you tried soaking this coin in acetone? If it is truly toned, the acetone will have no effect on it. But if the colors are due to chemicals deposited on the surface, they will probably wash off.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I hope for your sake that it is natural toning because it would be a very beautiful coin. And for my sake to hope I could find one like it. Thank you for sharing your coin with us.

Yes, Hondo makes a great point. Have to decide whether I want to risk it now, lol.

@mrak.... I personally enjoy toned coins, especially Morgans. When it comes to collecting, our own individual interests are what makes collecting special to us. If it were my coin.... I'd leave it as-is, put it in a flip & admire it.

@coin rejector, I actually flipped it prior to starting this post. I am inclined to think this one leans more towards some kind of toning than staining. However, I like it as is. Can always break it out later if I want to know with more certainty.
