Working on a PCGS type set and the Liberty Seated dimes (and Half Dimes, quarters halves) are pretty frustrating. What do you guys think about what varieties should be included in a type set?

Depends on your preferences. A typical Dansco 7070 album contains 3 major types of Seated dimes and Half Dimes.. Personally I am content with just one variety but if you want to cover the main varieties with dimes it would be 1838-1860 with stars, 1853- 1855 with arrows, and 1860-1891 with legend. As for the Half Dimes it would be 1837- 1859, 1853-1855, and 1860-1873. I am particularly fond of a 1853 type set since the half and quarter have rays and arrows.

If I may add, The Seated dimes went through 8 design changes over the span of the series. The three styles included in the Dansco 7070 represent the major changes in the design but fail to recognize the no stars and no legend dimes of 1837 and the 1838 O. Likewise with the Half Dimes. They went through 6 design changes with the 1837 and 1838 O issues not having stars or a legend. As with any series, the first year of issue is a coin not to be ignored.

Remember there are two periods where the LS dime had arrows, 1853-1855 when the weight was lowered, and then again in 1873-1874 when the weight was slightly increased.

Thus the
1840-1860 Type 3 Stars Obverse has two subtypes based on weight.
1860-1891 Type 6 Legend obverse has two subtypes.

PCGS Coin Facts lists the five (half-dime) or six (dimes) types

Myself, I prefer the first year of issue since technically the subsequent types are modifications of the original design. Yes, this could become cost prohibitive for most collectors. Simply an opinion when ultimately it boils down to what you end up chosing based on your apeal. On the subject, I'm 32 from a complete date/mintmark set of which perhaps six I'll most likely never afford even in AG. And I'm fine with that.
