Have any of you seen a 1857 Flying Eagle cent with the broken wing like that found on the 1858 overdate? I don't see it listed as any variety for this date and wondering if this coin is suspect.

I'm no expert but many of them in the PCGS gallery are very weak there, a couple with no wing tip at all. Here's one that's a close match to the ebay coin. https://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/8...523_2200.jpg

Thanks folks. I know that there were a lot of striking issues with the Flying Eagle cents from day one. Most notably the eagles head and tail being weakly struck. The broken wing I had only seen on the 1858 overdate as a die marker and never realized that other non overdate coins exist with the same broken wing due to over polished dies. Learn something new every day thanks to the people here!

Wish the Bay listing had a better image of the reverse; this example has an odd "notch" in the "T" of CENT that transferred to a few counterfeits: https://www.lccoins.com/default/185...rtified.html

Are you saying that the coin at L&C is a counterfeit? The auction for the original coin I was questioning hammered at $310 for AU-50 in a soapbox slab.

No, the L&C example may well be the source coin for counterfeits.
