Coin arrived today. Paralyse, you were right to notice the scratch on the headband. I did as well, but it appears to be fairly minor. I still put this grade in between EF40 and EF45. Does have a bit of a rub on the cheek, but doesn't appear to be from cleaning to me. I think this would straight grade with a TPG. Thoughts?

i think it grades straight the obv looks like a solid 40 the reverse 45. not sure which way it would lean but it looks better than the OP photos.

With your new photos I'm dropping down to EF-40. It should still straight grade, the ribbon mark is very minor.

I'm not unhappy. I thought VF35 / EF40 Obv & EF45 Rev from the start and feel like I did OK. Trying to improve my eye with a little help from my friends.

So I went on ebay looking for a reference PCGS coin to compare. Here are the rather poor pictures of a 1908-S graded at XF40 by PCGS that's currently for sale for $195 including shipping. My coin is better than this, so I'm more confident that it's a solid EF40 coin.

Cool piece. I'd be thinking XF45--a weak 45, but 45 nonetheless.
