I am excited to offer my first post here, because this is just such a great resource!! I have been saving my old pennies for years, and over the past few weeks, I decided to start pulling them out and going through them with my daughters, trying to look for doubled dies, etc. And holy crap, is this ever challenging/frustrating/fun/addicting!!! Anyway, I came across this 1984P penny & I *think* I've found my first DD ( DDR)? It really does kind of look like a DDR, particularly on the U N S A, etc., but I certainly appreciate the fact that could be Machine Doubling, hub doubling , etc. Also, I haven't been able to find any verification of this on the registry sites (VV, Wexlers, copper coins, etc.), so it may not be anything of note. I would be particularly interested in grateful to receive any input anyone may able to provide (I'm trying to do better with my pics working with my loupe/iPhone). Thank you so much!!

I'll tell you Machine Doubling from a distance. Your images are far to small to for anyone to get a good read. Try and get some images that are 800x800.

However to add to the MD call: doubtful you would ever find one in circulation that is not yet attributed. It happens but not often. Also from what I can see, the doubling appears shelf like and moves in the same direction. These are both affects of MD. Keep looking though, they turn up when you least expect.

As a follow up, your lighting is great, just image size.

This is such great input - thank you so much!!! As a newbie, I can only understand the concept of MD v true DD (eg, 3D elevational shelving created by multiple strikes v 2D doubled width created by a single strike by a doubled forge), but I'm starting to realize that actually identifying it really does require putting in enough time to train the eye.

Looking at the tip of A in states is clearly a step like MD. It is hard to see other letters, need better close ups.
