The CoinStar kiosk at my local grocery store is located near the Customer Service Desk and the Self Check-Out line. I always glance at the reject bin when I walk by it -- but typically it is empty because I suppose the employees quickly take any rejected coins that a customer doesn't retrieve. But recently I had better luck.

Quality vs. Quantity: Last week I noticed that there were three small coins in that bin, and when I got closer I could tell that two of them were silver dimes. The third one was an older UK five-pence piece. Two outta three ain't bad (1st photo).

Quantity vs. Quality: Yesterday the food store employees were very busy handling the Christmas rush. I was amazed when I looked at the CoinStar reject bin -- it was overflowing with rejected coins (apparently left by a customer who probably had used the kiosk only a few minutes before I arrived)! I emptied it shamelessly and then bought the items I needed. Here is what I found:

(1) Several common US coins, and a very nice 1964 quarter (2nd photo)
(2) $6.50 in Canadian coins and 2.30 in Euros (3rd photo)

I also found small coins from six countries (including the UK, UAE, and Australia).

The silver quarter is the first one that I have acquired. I hunt for silver dimes in customer-wrapped rolls, and for silver half dollars. I think that a quarter is large enough that a savvy person will notice that it looks different than other quarters and take it out of circulation..

Excellent haul, NorthShoreMA! Free silver is always a welcome treat. By the way, that toonie on the right looks like a camel toe - can't quite tell from the pic.

For me, I'd rather have the first haul, but I'm interested in which was your fave @north.

The larger group of rejected coins was my favorite. It marks the first time that I found a silver quarter, and I enjoyed sorting through the cache and finding larger-denomination Canadian and European coins that have moderate intrinsic value. In addition, it was an interesting mix of coins used on several continents. It also surprises me that someone would simply abandon so many coins that the kiosk rejected.

NorthShoreMA That was quite the impressive find. No such luck for me. Never found even a washer.
