The hot streak that started eight weeks ago continues. Yesterday the teller at my regular bank told me she had ordered another box of half dollars from Loomis. When I opened the box I found an "ender" -- a 1967 Kennedy coin (1st photo photo). Surely a good sign...

I found seven silver half dollars opening 25 rolls located on the side of the box where I found the ender. Better still, four of those coins are 1964 Kennedys that contain as much silver as nine 1965-1969 Kennedy half dollars (2nd photo). But I found nothing of interest in the last 25 rolls.

I think my recent experience is evidence that someone brought a cache of silver half dollars to a bank in my area (naively receiving face value for them). Those coins were mixed with regular half dollars at the Loomis facility near me before they were counted and wrapped -- creating boxes that each contain an unusually large number of silver coins. The box that I acquired early last week contained 34 silver coins (including a 1964 Kennedy and a Walking Liberty coin). The next box I acquired didn't contain any silver coins -- but the most recent one did (although only the rolls that were used to fill the first half of that box contained coins from the cache).

Today I asked the bank manager to acquire five more boxes from that Loomis facility. If I am lucky, those boxes will include more rolls that contain silver coins from that cache.

Seven silver coins in a $500 box of half dollars is a hit rate of 0.7% (not 0.07%). Because there was a gradient of silver coins in the rolls I removed from different sides of that box, I argued that only half of the rolls in that box contained coins from a cache someone brought to a bank. If I am correct, the hit rate would have been 1.4% if all of the rolls had that origin.

On December 20th, I described results from a box I acquired at the same bank that contained 34 40% silver Kennedy coins and two 90% silver half dollars (a 3.6% hit rate). If my cache interpretation is correct, 2.5% of the half dollars in Loomis rolls that incorporate that cache are silver. Any CRH would be happy to find 25 silver half dollars in a box (including three 90% silver coins). That's why I asked the bank manager to order five more boxes from the same site. Keeping my finders crossed...
