This is a cleaned and lower grade Korean 5 fun, struck in 1895. Normally I don't take a second look at it but this seems to be a lot heavier.

Normal 5 fun is supposed to weight around 6.9g... this example is quite heavy at 10.18g (!).

This coin is significantly thicker compared to other 5 fun of the same era. I have some 5 fun coins but none are this heavy. It doesn't look like a counterfeit either.

Anyone else come across a similar overweight 5 fun?

I don't know anything about coins like this, except perhaps something I read about Chinese coins.
Somewhere in my readings it seems to me that some Korean coins were (struck / overstruck?) on Chinese coppers.
If true then a host coin like 10 or 20 cash might account for the extra weight?
As stated, I don't know, but it might be worthwhile to check as a possible.

It is the other way around Albert. The Korean 5 fun coins were sold as scrap and shipped to China.

Bumping this thread. Anyone with 5 fun coins - can you weigh yours to see if yours is this heavy?

I have one sitting here. Not too much wear. 7.19 grams.
