6MP is exactly what I have in my SD-700IS, works perfectly for coin pictures! My camera will focus only a couple inches from the coin in macro mode.

Here's an example of what it can do close.

That's not bad at all!!! I had a better camera and a few nice lenses, but I had to sell all of my good photo gear to cover medical bills and such. A good lens for my D100 would cost me at least $400 that I don't have right now.

When I took that photography class I did it just to have something to do for a couple of days a week. What amazed me was 2 out the 11 students in the class had Ds and one even failed the class. All they had to do was take pictures, go to class and turn them in. They didn't even have to be good pictures.I turned in over 3000 images. One student only turned in 7 total for the entire semester.

That's the issue with the SLRs, it's big league expensive.....and a bit complicated for the average folk. Did you check ebay for a used lens?

Hard to believe anyone would fail a photography class! It's probably one of most useful things to learn for life. These days literally everyone takes pictures!

Yeah, a decent macro lens on ebay from a reputable seller is still in the $150 to $200 range.

I was blown away when the professor told me about the guy who failed that class. All he wanted to talk about when he had to present his assignments was his frat brothers...

All young people these days just pop out their "smart phones" to take pictures. I guess it's just too much trouble to actually learn how to do something. I mean with all of the f-stops and shutter speeds and focal length and depth of field stuff (Sarcasm) how can we expect generation "give it to me now" to even try when all of that is built in to their pocket computers...
