Ran across this odd 1776-1976 Kennedy clad proof on ebay. The coin has dark toning, but the reverse is what draws the eye. That large irregularity behind Independence Hall looks almost like a moon. I found myself wondering if that was a die polishing problem, or possibly a gas bubble. After reading the Error Ref article again, perhaps the coin has been exposed to fire or intense heat, and that explains the dark toning as well.

If the irregularity had happened in a different position, it wouldn't be as visually compelling. Perhaps it is Franklin's rising sun?
