Hi All!

Here I have a interesting Chile 2 Real piece. Which has been countermarked with NID or DIN. I was not able to find it in Gregory Brunck his book. Is there anyone here that happens to know this countermark. It seems not a bankermark or a maverick piece to me.

I'm guessing it might be a merchant countermark.

There's a Portugese copper 10 reis countermarked NID for sale on Ma-Shops, date invisible.

Good eye, @Pertinax - that is indeed the exact same stamp:

The strange part is how much earlier that 10 Reis is - that is Pedro II, piece looks to be dated........ 1699!! (rotate the "VTILIT..." side 90 deg. clockwise, date is faintly visible at the top).

Two rather disparate coinage entities as is - AND separated by 150 years?!

Curious. Where in the world would these coins have mingled together? That stamp doesn't look particularly American style-wise...

Nice find! It is exactly the same indeed.
Brazil was a colony of Portugal. Perhaps the coin mentioned in mashop was in this area at some time. Which is not that far from Chile ;) . with some imagination.
