I don't know much of anything about these. It was inherited. I was reluctant to remove it from the plastic holder, so hopefully these photos will due.

Obviously this is circulated and appears to have been folded and what not. Also looks like there are some stains. Is there anything special that one looks for in these or anything else that would be good for me to know?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Wonderful and popular large size "Chief" note! Nice inheritance, too!

Appears to be in nice circulated fine to very fine condition and is valued at several hundred dollars in most pricing guides. Check ebay "sold" prices to get an idea of what recently sold notes that are in similar it condition to yours have sold for.

Nice note to have!

Agree with Sky 100%

It's ranked 10th on the list of the 100 Greatest American Notes. Most serious U.S. paper money collectors either have one or are looking to get one. It's genuinely iconic.

Very cool If your looking for some general info and grading/value you can start here in this link which also agrees with westernsky. Most paper money dealers and collectors just call this a chief or an Indian. This is a situation where people are going to know what you are talking about whether you say chief or Indian. https://antiquemoney.com/value-of-1...-chief-note/

I was just sorting some boxes from storage and happened to pull out this grand theft auto 5 game. The V design looks a bit familiar although the font of FIVE looks a bit better on the note.

I was looking a bit further on the note and I found this great coinweek article on the history that you and some others may enjoy reading or linking to. https://coinweek.com/running-antelo...certificate/

I was going to post mainly originally that these $5 silver certificates are commonly called chief, running antelope, or onepapa notes for the center image. These bills seem to go often around $200 or more. In high grades can go over $1500, or if its a low serial number. Some come with a star symbol at the end of the serial number, which can double its value. In the guides it shows that there are 11 signature combination varieties, some of which are rare and worth more money also. But that link covered most of that, and helped with grading so thought to just toss that up. Definately one of the most popular notes for currency collectors.

Yes, the gta 5 comparison is funny, just happened to notice the resemblance as I was sorting through some old games.

I've been doing some additional reading and thought this was interesting in regards to this particular note.

Southern Indiana collector Norm Pender points out that one of the Chief notes is distinctive. Friedberg 278 has, not one, but two Native Americans on it. The other is Register of the Treasury Houston Benge Teehee, whose facsimile signature appears on the note. Teehee was appointed by Woodrow Wilson and served from March 24, 1915, to Nov. 20, 1919. His signature appears with that of Treasurer John Burke.

Teehee's father was seven-eighths Cherokee and his mother half Cherokee. He was an accomplished Oklahoman — lawyer, alderman, mayor, county attorney, state representative and oil executive. But up to 1924 one thing was missing from his resume — the title of citizen. Even though he was the man whose name was on every bank note printed by the United States for almost five years, as a Native American, until the Indian Citizenship Act was passed he could not become a citizen and could not vote in an election. Teehee was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1942.

Most of the controversy at the time was from the headdress he was wearing. Running Antelope was Chief of the Tatokainyanka Tribe but the tribal headdress was too tall for the center vignette so he's seen in a Pawnee headdress.

I decided to take the bill out for better pictures and to check for pin holes. No pin holes. Here's some better picks. For those that commented on grading, do you think this is still fine? The paper was crisper feeling than I was expecting. My mom bought this from a dealer in June 1984 for $130. I have the old school credit card receipt. She kept the receipts for all items that she deemed collectable.
