It I'm still scratching my head as to what may have been there . If anybody has any ideas as to how I can find out what was originally stamped it would help me out. A lot . I was thinking of cleaning it but if there's any other way please advise

To CCF! It could be a Grease Filled Die. What's the weight? A reverse picture would help as well.

Here is a bit of information on the 1943 copper cent
https://bullionsharks.com/blog/ever...gad_source=1

a Quote from that site:

Quote:
Today a total of 27 1943 copper wheat pennies are confirmed to exist and have been graded, including the unique 1943-D, 6 of the 1943-S and 20 of the 1943 cents, including 7 graded by PCGS and 13 by NGC.

only 27 are known to exist and all have been accounted for and graded.

Surely there must be an expert to find out if that is a three or not. Hope it is.

I think I see what you're seeing, Rich, but it's doesn't line up like an actual 1943 date ... see pic...
