I have found several Walking Liberty half dollars during the two years that I have been a coin-roll hunter. But for some reason I'd never found a Benjamin Franklin half dollar -- until today. I visited a few banks in a small town near me but couldn't locate any half dollars. However, two tellers at the last bank on my list told me they each had $5.00 that customers recently had cashed in. I didn't find anything interesting in the 10 coins that I purchased from the first teller. But I found a 1967 Kennedy half dollar and a 1962 Benjamin Franklin half dollar in the lot that I purchased from the second teller. I showed these silver coins to both of them and explained their value, but they didn't seem to be impressed by either one. Ah, callow youth...

Well done @north. Be sure to add a pic or two of that half dollar to this thread so that we can enjoy it too!

As requested by Spence, I've attached an image that shows the 1962 Benjamin Franklin half dollar (which I didn't previously have in the coin collection I started 60 years ago), the 40% silver Kennedy coin that I also found yesterday, and a 1940 Mercury Head dime that was in one of the customer-wrapped rolls that I acquired at the same bank. One of the coins in the lot of 10 that I purchased from the first teller included the 1982 Bermuda half dollar (which I will keep as a curiosity).

I am bringing home 4 boxes of halves tonight to start my first search of 2024... I searched about 40 boxes of halves last year and I too have never pulled anything earlier than a 64 Kennedy. I had a teller give up a Walking Liberty but never anything other than than of interest. Hopefully 2024 brings me better luck :)

Quote: ...the 1982 Bermuda half dollar (which I will keep as a curiosity). The Bermudian dollar is pegged to the US dollar at 1:1, and the two currencies circulate side by side on the island. So buying it for 50 cents, you theoretically haven't lost any money on this deal. However, the 50 cent coin is no longer technically legal tender; these coins were phased out and formally withdrawn in 1990, and the ten-year period of redemption has long expired. So you can't now go to Bermuda and spend it for 50 cents.
