1838 Capped Bust Half - What Causes The Lines On This Coin?

adam126402 Pillar of the Community United States 554 Posts	Posted 01/12/2024 01:40 am I've seen a number of 1838 half dollars with lines similar to what you see pictured here on the right side and impacting the letters in particular. In some instances I've seen examples where only a portion of the reverse is affected and others where nearly the entire reverse is impacted. The pic clipped here is a PCGS straight graded AU58 half. These lines can be observed on areas that were not fully struck, such as the center of this 1808 O-110a. I had the privilege to observe one of the highest graded Capped Bust Reeded Edge variety sets, and I noticed roller lines on many of the examples. Suffering from bust half fever. Actually, that is not possible and here is why. Take a look at the OP's photo. The lines are only visible on the areas of the coin that are weakly struck. The weak areas, such as top of the F and D in HALF DOL, are minutely recessed, making significant damage impossible without affecting the high points of the coin. The rims are usually fully struck, because metal flows outward and they are boldly impressed. The rim, the highest point of the coin, clearly shows no damage. Suffering from bust half fever.
