1946-Penny---Is-This-An-Error-Coin?
1946-Penny---Is-This-An-Error-Coin?

I found this coin in a bag of pennies that has been untouched for 50+ years.

Note that obverse is copper, reverse appears to be steel, zinc, or silver. The coin is non-magnetic. Also note that, on the reverse, you can see that the copper wraps around the edges. It looks like someone may have filed the flat spot on the edge; it is silver colored.

I searched this and other forums and could not find a similar coin. Is this a genuine error coin? If so, what is a good way to assess its value (if any)? Thanks in advance.

@pge, first welcome to CCF. Second, the silver color was added to this cent after it left the mint. It might be silver-plating or even mercury that was rubbed onto the coin at some point. That aspect is damage rather than a mint error. As to the rim, you might have a slight clip there. Can you please post a picture of the edge in that region? Thx.

Spence,

Thanks for the quick response. Here is the edge pic as requested. Let me know if it isn't sharp enough:

Why would someone add color like this? In a few places around the rim, it looks like the copper is folded over the silver, e.g. at the "W" position (~270 deg). Jeez, I sure hope it isn't Mercury!

To CCF! The reverse appears to have been plated and the edge of the rim looks like it was filed down. PMD.

Reverse looks painted. The clip looks like PMD.

it looks 'manufactured'

BUT if it were a real error, your method of holding the coin with metal tongs can reduce the value of a coin.

Reverse definitely artificially colored. Hard to say for sure what's going on with the rim. to the CCzf!
