Just found this creepy looking coin while coin roll hunting. I really like it because it is just so odd looking but was wondering if this is just post mint damage or something else.
Thanks for any ideas what cause this nickel to look so weird.

My vote is PMD. Probably acid damage.

MintPenny, what is the weight of your coin? It almost looks like a counterfeit.

Post-strike damage, yes. Possible exposure to intense heat.

Looks like someone took it to a wire brush wheel.

Mechanical, chemical, or heat damage (and possibly a combination of them), so not a mint error. Those do look a bit like heavy flow lines, but I agree that they aren't.

Spence, it might be original tiny Die Deterioration lines eaten into huge features by corrosion. The heat theory seems like a good one, too.

I was thinking some form of Die Deterioration. I saw online somewhere there was a quarter that showed extreme Die Deterioration that looked sort of like this but I can't find it any more. The flow lines look like some I've found online but much more extreme. Thanks for all the info.

I do not see this coin as a die issue.

If it was Die Deterioration The whole coin would be effected. The Northwest area on the reverse has been less effected. And the west side of the obverse less effected, that's where they held onto the coin when they took it to the wire wheel.
