This post is same as yesterday, plus adding 2 photos of the Gold Coin in question. "I have read discussions of Long Service Medals given out by HOME INSURANCE COMPANY in the early 1900s, for 25 year Sterling Silver coins. I was offered a Gold 50 year service medal today from 1956, that has my Great Uncles name on it, who was in the insurance business. I have just been shown a photo. Can't see the rim, but was told it is marked 14K gold on the edge. I am hoping someone could elaborate on this coin about it's gold content and any other relevant information. Thanks."

@hst, first welcome to CCF and thx for following with pics of this very interesting piece of your family's history. I don't see a list for the gold, 50 year medal, but my go-to website for tokens does list the 25 year, silver version. I've included a link below. On the tokencatalog listing, they speculate that the business was headquartered in NYC.

As to value, you could weigh it and calculate the bullion content. However, depending on you financial wherewithal and sentimentality, you might consider paying in excess of the gold content just to have this family connection from nearly a century ago.

Thanks very much for the response. To get down to specifics, I was contacted by the owner of this coin, who says they have been in touch with a coin dealer of theirs about this find. Thinking it may be a relative of mine, which it is, they offered it to me before selling it for it's melt price. The coin has in small print, stamped to the side of the smooth rim, what appears to be 14K. The 4 is weak. The pennyweight is 18.59 and about the dimensions of a silver dollar. I am interested in purchasing it. Everything seems to be as described, but I am concerned to know for sure this coin is the same metal throughout and does not contain a core of cheaper metal, as was discussed in older posts about the 25 year Sterling Silver medal. The asking price is just under the value of a half oz. of Gold. I'm willing to pay that, but not if it turns out to be brass or something else inside. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

Would need an XRF gun to perform a non destructive test to find out if it was pure 14k and not plated. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find someone with one to test. There are specific gravity tests that also could be done but having never attempted that I can say they are not the easiest thing to perform.

I purchased one off of ebay years ago for quite a bit below melt as I was aware of the gold 50 yr award medal and I am sure other bidders had their doubts. I do not remember what the piece was marked but it was not gold filled or plated. So if is marked 14k you are good to go. What a great piece of family memorabilia. For me the opportunity to acquire a piece of family memorabilia such as this would far and away outweigh the slight premium of the gold content. Good luck.

Looks good, I have one dated 1940 and it is 14 k, 28.63 grams. Well worth more than melt value especially with a family connection.
