I recently got a collection of Australian pennies in a folder, and while there were coins in the spots for all the varieties, The part of the coin with K G was rather worn and I could not see any dots.

Are there any other reliable markers to identify the variety if the K G is too worn?

Not off hand,i'll check my notes later in the week.

The K.G variety should be able to be ID with USB scope, the dot after the K is usually there even on worn egs as its mostly protected from wear.

The 1940 K.Gs usually have a reasonable dot so generally not a problem to ID with a 10x loupe.
The 1941 K.Gs can be a problem due to weak dots.
Many or most have ghosting and this can be used as a sort of die marker I guess.
So if its a 1941 with ghosting and its not a Y. its probably a K.G with a weak dot.

What causes the ghosting on the 41 penny. Die clash, strike through, planchet flaw ? I have seen ghosting on a 41 kg with a pronounced dot and a 41 with ghosting, weakly struck especially the K +G.

I believe its called "Progressive Indirect Design Transfer". There are several threads on this forum that explain it.

Thanks, folks.

I do love the large coppers and my set of them is complete save for the 1930 (no surprise), 1925 (I guess that I could get that if I really wanted to), and a few varieties which I may not bother with. I also got the 1/2 penny set but that is missing the 1923 (no surprise). They came in a 1962 copyrighted Dansco, which was just the "push the coins in the hole" style and hence the obverses had some discoloration.

I noticed that the varieties in the album did not match the ones in Krause-Krause had a few extras.

Is there any interest in Australia for the old style holders?
