I have this 1883-O Morgan NGC graded MS 63, no
VAM or specialty designation. I was looking at it last night and noticed what appears to be a possible clashed 'E' at the upper left of the bow on reverse. I proceeded to scope it but couldn't really make out any distinguishable 'e' mark.
However, while scoping the rest of the coin and prominent features/places to check, I found numerous indicators that it might possibly be a clashed 'e'
VAM. The clash marks above Liberty's head, the pattern in ear, the line in bottom loop of 3, the marks between eagle's wing and body, as well as the position of the O mintmark are all enough to have me seriously question if this is a possible
VAM.
I am definitely no amateur numismatic expert. Comparing it to online pictures makes me slightly hopeful but I do not know enough about die clashing and VAMs to definitively ID it or even give me enough cause to submit it for confirmation.
The fact that NGC did not identify it as a
VAM is what gives me pause. Maybe the person who submitted it did not ask for any variety diagnostics, just to get it graded? Or is it one of those things where yeah you can probably say it likely is a
VAM, but key details too faint to give a 100% identification?
I uploaded a few pictures of it and the areas that warrant a potential
VAM ID. If anyone needs a picture of a specific area or clarification on anything, I can definitely do that! I really appreciate any help or commentary on this! Thanks!
