I have this 1864 IHC with a bunch of striations by Liberty's ear/face. I thought it kinda looks similar to the variety FS-401 S-5 " Polished Die " which seems to be one of the only major varieties for the 1864 copper nickel IHC.

Thanks for the welcome! For years I've been meaning to post stuff here, I'm glad I got around to it! Definitely have a lot of coins to post and commentary to discuss.

I promise I won't be the guy claiming to find a 1964 SMS in his pocket change...

Thanks for the input! I'm leaning more towards it being a variety, too bad it's more of a mid grade but still cool.

I also believe I've seen similar types of die polishing lines on other years of Indian Heads. Usually in that same area near the ear and above the neck. Idk if it could maybe be a more widespread variety/state than is recognized. Also curious what they could have been polishing off in that part of the obverse?

In looking at the official version, I am struck by how the lines resemble the reverse shield. There are quite a few odd squiggles in front of the hair lock and below the hair band, too. I would have guessed a die clash. But if the pros say file lines, then that's obviously the right conclusion.
