I thought this was an interesting looking error so I put in a bid and won! It does appear that there was some intentional damage to the coin but I'm not sure. I wonder if that centered strip of black, coinciding with the remaining clad, is showing some of the planchet contamination responsible for the missing clad issue. Weighs 4.8g

It is visually compelling, for sure.

I think you might have it backwards. That blackish stripe seems to be the only strip where the cupronickel stayed bonded. It might be that color is what it looks like when the cupronickel cladding is bonded to the copper core.

A rather interesting purchase, congrats on a neat find! =)

Very interesting.!!!!!!?. Detach after minting? Probably? Never see as this.

Sure this coin must be see in hand and analize. Maybe Mike will chime on.

Thanks for catching that John1 and for all the comments on this one from the CCF crew!

Thanks Brandmeister and I like your explanation. I am curious what that stripe represents.

That one is above my pay grade. The metallurgy of clad coin minting is a Silviosi or Mike Diamond level question.

Looks like it was a double clamshell before someone ripped both of them off. Nice pick.
