I ran across this Peace dollar on ebay. As soon as I saw it, my brain was yelling, "FAKE!" I think it is the pewter gleam of the coin, and also the melted appearance of the finer details. Is it a genuine coin? Possibly buffed or polished to that strange finish?

I'm not looking to buy that coin. I just want to further my numismatic education.

Whatever this item is, it did not leave the US Mint looking like that. Plated, polished or fake I can't tell - but stay away!

I agree it is a plated coin and disappointing that this seasoned seller with a whopping 567000 transaction is neglecting to disclose that........

A highly polished real VF IMO.

Throwing it in silver test solution or a rock tumbler would break the ugly polish. Still a cull but not as ugly.

It's at $63 with 11 bids and 6 days of auction left. That's pretty sad. The listing does say polished, but it's buried way down in a block of little text. Their store usually has quality stuff, I don't know why they even bothered with that particular coin.

I think it's a combination of harsh polishing and lighting.

It's a bummer that it's polished.

Definitely polished. Too bad, just a hole filler now.

1921 is a key date. There is a demand for coins even in cleaned condition. I personally wouldn't buy one in this grade though.

The seller is legit, honest in my opinion. I've bought several coins from him. My brother lives a few blocks from his business. He does not sell over the counter, not a walk in store, just ebay. He will evaluate coins that are brought in and make offers by appointment.

His ebay store used to be called vette1986 but changed his store name to Hunting for Treaszure Coins.
