The holder somewhat resembles the old Blanchard slabs. I would grade your coin a strong 64 with a good shot at 65.

the coin has a lot of field spots and little scratches, which should knock it out of mint state in my opinion. So I thought AU, but I figured if I was looking to buy an AU coin and saw this, I'd pass it up. It's not what I would expect an AU coin to look like.

@sickpuppy78501 You need to know how the TPGs grade. You cannot create your own grading standards because they are useless and a waste of everyone's time.
Here are some beginner tips:
1. MS coins have no wear.
2. Luster is removed entirely around XF-40.
3. You always strike out with a questionable color designation.

sickpuppy. marks & scratches will not take a coin out of MS range. they will however lower the grade, this is why there are MS60 through MS68 grades. luster and marks will place the coin in one of these boxes. everyone is at a difference level in grading skills and just add this to your knowledge base for the future.

hope that helps

Hey all, I have an update. I broke down and sent the '84-O in to PCGS, mainly for sickpuppy's sake. Results are below. Thanks to everyone for your opinions and insight, it was very helpful as always. Ok, here she is:

You guys are the best! If anyone is interested in more grading fun, you can also check out my 1888-O Hot Lips post. I'll be updating with two different grading results on that one tomorrow!
