The best way to gain experience it to just dive in, go to Vamworld.com, click on the year/mint, 1887 (P) start comparing their descriptions/pics to your coin, it's fun. Start with the first coin and go down the list. You can read for specifics like doubled date, doubled stars, die crack to narrow it down.

I've been currently sick with covid and also have zero access right now to nothing but my phone and scope. No bluetooth/wifi setup on the scope or way to download currently. So my apologies and I hope people will be a bit understanding. As far as my original post. I mentioned I use VAM world. I also asked for help with trying to determine a VAM. Some tips. Pointers. Anything really? I don't know how or why a Morgan would have multiple Vams/characteristics of Vams. When it's like that is it a multi designation or is it the first or the last or my choice? I just feel pretty lost even using VAM world

legacyofcoins, I hope you feel better soon. Identifying VAMs can be complicated. Some VAMs have different die stages, early, mid, late where the details on the coin are different, clash, cracks, etc. I looked on Vamworld and did not see anything exactly like yours. Specifically I looked for the doubling of the date, the stars and the die chip on left side of the second 8. Vamworld listings are brief, don't describe more details until you click on a specific variety. Even then it may not show photos of every die marker. Some VAMs may not be shown on Vamworld and may be in published editions which have been recently identified. Leroy Van Allen co-authored the VAM book and later editions. He has retired and turned over the duties of identifying new VAMs to others. When you feel better figure out how to take good full pics of the coin, obverse and reverse. People need to see the whole coin. You can post them here. Better yet, join Vamworld and post them there. There are more collectors that know more about VAMs that can help.

I will try and help. First of all, cracks will not be listed. They may be shown on the VAMWorld pages, but will not be in the listing. They are too weak on your coin to be called breaks, which are listed. The doubling under the date digits appears to be Machine Doubling. When you go to the VAMWorld discussion forum, there is a post at the top entitled "Do You Think You Have a Doubled Die". Look at that. Finally, the date placement appears to be a Near Date. Look at the listings that start with a near date as an attribution point.
