I picked this coin up yesterday and am wondering whether its color is considered toning or is it just dirty or both? It's not particularly attractive, so I am thinking of dipping it in acetone and see what happens with it. Rather new at it, so just curious. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Festus, may we see the obverse? Definitely give it an acetone soak, as that will not harm the coin in any way.

It maybe environmental discoloration or very old toning that has completed it's course through the colors and has turned that ugly blackish tone.

Acetone won't do much on this one. Might have some mild ED.

Acetone won't do anything.
Also, dipping it is a lost cause unless you leave it in so long this this coin becomes lifeless.

Looks like environmental damage.

@Festus Nice pictures. Perhaps environmental damage, but to my eyes, still a keeper.

sweet. hard to argue with a Morgan dollar. when I get morgans like those it's mostly just to figure out the VAM designation. you took good pix of that coin, it looks like VAM-18 to me. a low near date catches my eye. nice.
