I've seen this sort of thing many times, and I always thought it was caused by metal squeezing past the collar. Doing research for something else, I ran across these two 1900-O halves that have exactly the same pattern of "damage" on the rim. Therefore it is on the die, not an artifact of striking. What do we call this? The closest I could find on error-ref is "peripheral die damage" https://www.error-ref.com/peripheral-die-damage/
These coins are paired with a reverse showing a strong die clash, so perhaps that is related to the obverse die damage.

Usually called Rim Cuds, these are small die chips that are on the rim that are the result of the edges of the die chipping away.
Suffering from bust half fever.

Thanks, I thought it might be called some form of Cud but I had trouble finding https://www.error-ref.com/rim-cud/ and the examples seem to mostly be a more complete chunk of the rim missing. I guess it's the same thing but more minor.
