Hi, I was wondering why the US Mint rolls of the 2009 Lincoln birthplace cent were more valuable than the rolls from banks. US Mint rolls are selling for $70 or $80 on ebay, but regular rolls from banks are going for $6. Aren't they the same coins?

I believe it's because the mint rolls have the US Mint wrapper on them as opposed to bank rolls which usually have different wrappers i.e. String and Sons or shrink wrap (yuck)...

Same coin, different wrapper. Its amazing what the mint wrapper carries for premium over bank rolls.

Coins from the mint and the banks are identical in every way. No point in paying such an outrageous premium just because of the wrapper.

Once again the mint is gouging the public. But of course they know someone will buy about anything from them at outrageous prices. How sad.

These "two roll Sets" from the Mint have been discussed at great length with many different topics right here on the forum.... I would just say that there are two sides to every coin.... .....meaning.... varying opinions about what you've asked....if you want some opinions that are "the other point of view" from some very seasoned Cent collectors.....then I suggest reading some of these other topics and see what "they" say as well.

At the end of March, I bought the P and D Lincoln 2009 cent rolls with the US Mint wrapper for $19. Now they are worth over $80-$100. I think I made a good investment.

They are a monopoly so they can do whatever they'd like.

Let everyone else pay the out of this world prices. My wife spoke with our favorite teller today about getting the brinks guy to bring a box, and guess who drove up. Yep the brinks truck. No, they didn't have any 09's on the truck. But our teller did tell him to bring her a few boxes next week. I plan to get a box ( they will be P mint ) so I am looking at making some trades here on the forum when and if I do acquire them. I will be looking for 3 rolls of D mint and we can work something out on the rest.

If you sell them before people get distracted by the next "new thing" and the prices drop back down. In the long run I do not think they will support the current prices. In answer to a question about what the price might be in twenty years my answer was $3 to $4 a roll set. I'd call it a good short term speculation.
