Can I get some feedback regarding this series? Those coins look neat and I am thinking about putting the set together. Does anyone know if there is an album that has all three years together. Is buying the lenses for each year the way to go? Please give me some advice!

Hey mad258. I found information on them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_nickelFrom what I understand there are 4 designs with mints from Denver and Philadelphia, making 8 coins total. 2004: same Jefferson obverse as always with 2 different reverse: "handshake" "Keel boat" 2005: unique only to that year Jefferson obverse with 2 different obverse: "bison" "ocean scene" Which ones do you already have? Which ones do you need? Ken

Thanks matchbox & eaglefoot for your replies. Ken, I just decided to start collecting this series so know I have to find an album and buy a few rolls to get started. What do you think would be reasonable prices for the yearly lenses? I'm also working on completing my Kennedy half dollar set. Mark

These things grow on trees around here. Every roll of nickels I open has at least a couple.

mad258, you may wish to ask some of the other members about pricing. I'm not too adept on prices.
However, I have extras of 6 of the 8 coins, all from circulation.
The extras I have are all 4 of the Denver mint coins and the Philadelphia keelboat and bison. You'll still need the Philadelphia handshake and ocean scene to get.
PM me your address and I'll send them off.

Ken, I've never sent a PM before. For the life of me I don't see a link for this either! How do you do it?

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of putting together circulated sets of modern coins...I like to collect what I like, but I do want some possibility of an increase in value say in 30 years or so. And in my humble opinion, this just ain't gonna happen with modern circs. Now as an example, the above mentioned set of westward nickels can be had in certified (ngc) ms-65 or so for less than $100. And for modest in creases the set can be upgraded to ms-66 or so and add the proofs for another $45. At least with this route, you have a real chance of an increase in value.

Since I ordered a folder this afternoon, I'll go ahead and put together a circulated set and consider getting some graded MS65 or better along the way. Sounds like good advice oshelt.

Actually, if you collect the proofs, there are more than 12 if you consider the satin finish coins from the mint sets. For 2004 and 2005 I come up with 18 which includes the proofs. I have been saving a pair of satins along with my Gem BU circulating issues since they came out with them in mint sets. They are still doing this. Every year now, I have to track down 5 nickels. I think that this is a similar scenario as when the 1965 1966 and 1967 special mint sets were made.

I agree with Wheezydog. The Satin Finish coins from the 2005+ mint sets are distinctive from the business strikes made of circulation. If you collect proofs and circulation strikes, you might as well collect the satin finish coins as well.

But I'm just not willing to part with any cash for the endeavor at this time !..... My completed P & D "pocket change" Harris folder will have to suffice for some time .....

I thought about doing Westward Journey from circulation, but the Buffalo and especially the Ocean in View designs are two of my favorite coin designs, so I wanted a very good set for those. I went to the coin shop today and asked to see a Westward Journey set. It had P and D unc. with proof S in between those, one set per year, $8 each. The problem was they were terrible! One set had at least two coins with huge fingerprints, some had marks and scratches, and some were in the holes very crooked. So instead I got a 2005 proof and 2005 mint set, for $12 and $7 respectively. I'm very happy with them. They come with the State Quarters too, which I totally didn't even think about when I bought them.
