My father and I are curious as to what his coin could be worth and how to exactly go about getting it appraised or certified if its worth sending in. From what he has told me about it it's a 1943 Bronze Wheat penny and it isn't magnetic. The weight does fluctuate from 2.9 grams to 3.11 depending on the scale used. His coin appears to be from the Philadelphia mint since it has no mint stamp on it. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hello and
It appears like the 3 in the date could have been tampered with since it looks different from all the other digits.
To my eyes, a person removed the last digit and replaced it with a crafted 3.
Head over to PCGS coinfacts and look at the real deal 1943 copper cents, and compare to yours...

Not saying you don't have a legit specimen there, if so, would be a monumental find... But be leery of all the altered coins out there and always without exception compare these to the real deal coins that have been certified to see if you have a match, or if things don't seem to add up...

Some pics of the third side, (edge if the coin) would be good. It would help us rule out the coin being re-plated with copper.

Wouldn't this rule out plating?

Oh, it's not magnetic. You should send it in. Side pic please, in a few places.

So, Marve, do you think that this is a legitimate copper 43, for some reason?

First off, I do wish you luck however there is a significantly greater chance of it being a counterfeit than the real deal. That said, given the few genuine examples that exist - along with the assumption of a single die pair - there are just too many glaring inconsistencies with known examples. Here is what I quickly saw in comparison to other Philli minted examples:

- 4 is way too small
- R in TRUST has no legs
- No mouth/lips (LDS N/A) - wear N/A as low spot and inconsistent with remaining coin
- All devices too close to rim on Obverse

I think the 3 looks good, I'm going to assume the 4 was modified/replaced.

Do you realize how unlikely that is? All folks on here ever try to do is save folks money on something that is most likely not what they want it to be. I would wish nothing more than the OP to have what they think they do but is SOOOOO unlikely, it's just nice to be able to rule it out for them, so they don't have to waste money. What's a few extra pics? No big deal, I would think.

Absolutely not! That's why I posted the 2 comparison pictures. As mrwhatisit posted - the 3 looks to be added or manipulated somehow.

Cast - pretty obvious marker came screaming out.

RB from PCGS on Left. Nice little hit on the back of Lincoln's head and WOWSA, exact same hit on OP coin. What a coincidence.

From what my dad says he got it from my grandfather some years back and his dad had held on to it for some time. The coin is bronze and appears almost gold colored. I will take more pics of it later this evening. Any particular angles?
