I soaked some colonial copper coins in olive oil (in separate sealed glass jars for each coin)...and forgot. Now after about two years, what's the best way to get the olive oil off and put them in 2x2 mylar/cardboard holder?

I figured some Dawn no scent/no additives dish detergent and warm water first. Without rubbing as not to disturb the patina that may have developed. I am afraid to use acetone, because it may change color.

Any chance you have before and after pics of the coins? Definitely curious to see the changes in the coins.

Unfortunately, do not have any before pictures and did not open the jars yet. Adding to that is that my old fashioned spinning hard drive died about a year ago and lost all my files then. I may be able to look up some photos in my ebay history as I bought couple of them from there. Will post once I have the coins removed from the jars and mounted.

I would say start with water and let them sit overnight to air dry. Then take a towel and wipe the remaining. A little gloss to the coins is fine.

Acetone will remove all moisture from the coin and dry it back out, eliminating reason to soak it in the first place.

Olive oil is slightly acidic
Will turn copper and bronze coins darker, if you over soak.

I sometimes use olive oil on ancient coins, to make encrustations and lumpy verdigris easier to remove.

Yes, extra virgin olive oil can re-tone the coin to near original patina color. I just do not know how durable that "patina" is, and do not want to touch the coin's surface.

Thank you, Simple running water seems to have worked well. I just removed my NJ coppers from the jars, and now I remember why I soaked two of them. Couple of them have green verdigris. Will try to gently use a porcupine quill under my microscope now that they may have loosened up.

On the not so nice surface condition coins I will try the Coin Care Luster Cleaner also, which is still being shipped. I never used that before, but I read that it used to be called Blue Ribbon and they made it non-toxic. Works well on copper with a cotton swab, supposedly.

I also have Renessaince Wax (bought it for my ancients).for long term preservation. But not sure, if it's something I should apply to NJ coppers, if I want to have them graded?
