I've wanted a $20 gold Liberty for a while. I looked at hundreds of them on ebay and Great Collections the last two months. They typically have a lot of bag marks, etc. unless you get MS63 and above. Since I'm mostly a stacker than a collector I decided to just buy a raw one from Liberty Coin. It's a common 1904. I paid 7.1% over it's melt value which is more than buying a raw 1 oz gold buffalo or raw 1 oz gold American eagle. It has some bag marks, light scratches etc but not bad. It may have been cleaned at one time, a lot of them have been. My camera is not good enough to pick up the small defects. I won't have it graded, not worth it. Next month is the local annual coin show. I'll look for a graded example, see if I can get a good deal on one there. I had two relatives serve with the Union Army during the civil war, might be fun owning a lower grade $20 gold from the 1860s. I also like the PL proof like ones. I mentioned in a recent thread on "junk silver" that I thought it was one of the great bargains in coin collecting, a high cool factor for not much premium over melt value, and the same goes for old gold. Your price might be an even bigger bargain because this looks like it could grade quite high. Once you start climbing up into the 60s the value really starts climbing and I wonder what this would grade at.

That's a beauty from any angle! I never realized how elegant the reverse is on this design until I saw your coin.

Looks quite nice. Certainly Choice Mint State quality from these images.
You say you paid 7.1% over melt. Want to make sure you know $20 Double Eagles do not contain one troy ounce of gold. The Buffs and Eagles of course do, Double Eagles contain 0.9675 troy ounces of gold.
Not trying to diminish your purchase in any way. You made a good move buying classic pre-1933 gold.
