Is there any way to remove this black gunk off the dime? I keep thinking I see a mint mark on it, but I can't tell. Maybe someone with better eyes can tell me if there is one. Thanks!

Well, it looks like there was a mintmark, but heavy circulation looks to have flattened it/worn it to a nub. Suggest giving the coin a long soak on 100% acetone. Acetone may (may...) remove most of the crub, or reduce it some.

I've soaked it for 24 hours or so and it didn't appear to do anything.

I don't know. It was in a small collection of my father's, who often metal detected.

I've seen people overlay pictures to prove mintmark locations but I don't know how to do that. Anybody on this forum that can overlay the OP's picture with a picture of a real 16-D Merc?

I think it's too far gone to save it.

I would try to raise the mint mark. There are a couple of threads here that have successfully raised the dates on silver coins. Get an eye dropper for the raise the date liquid and tilt the coin so the liquid drains off the coin and pat dry.

Here's a comparison of Festus's coin to the 1916-D Mercury dime MS65 from PCGS's website
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Severe environmental damage. The coin is a goner and will never come back.

E-Z-Est and a Q-Tip worked for me in the past. Make sure to rinse with clean water after.

Seriously interesting. So throwing the image into GIMP, zooming to 800%, and running a High Pass filter over it kind of makes it look like someone purposefully altered the source image. Just my opinion but how those pixels became so uniform in color is suspect, especially when they take the shape of a D.

I don't see a mintmark. In hand, try using glare against the surfaces so you can see the metal texture in that area, whether you can see a definite mintmark or not.

The photo wasn't altered, it's a genuine picture of a coin I have... anyways here is another picture after soaking it in acetone.
