Hello,

I have been looking for coins on craigslist lately to see what is there. I have seen quite a few posting from folks who have a bunch of world coins to sell from vacations, trips &c. Often times there is no price listed or there is a ridiculous price (several dollars per coin).

So, what do you think is a reasonable price to pay for random coins from more or less current world circulation? Would you pay some number of cents per coin or by weight or what?

Well, it's often important to ask when they got the coins. If it's from the 70s or so, chances are that many of the countries have fallen or their economy destroyed (so a lower price... maybe $5 for a pound).

Otherwise, the more modern, the more face value it should have, but you should always check out what you are getting first.
Rest in Peace

My local dealer buys world coins in bulk @ $5.00 per pound and sells at $6.50. He doesn't have time to sift through them and really only buys them to accomodate several other world coin collectors like me who buy 20-30 pounds at a time, drag them home and sift through them, and then drag them back for resale to him.

I've never failed to recoup the $1.50 difference each time I've gone through the coins, which so far have been very random from around the world ... as, Greenland, Acension Island, Belize, Nepal, Luxembourg, and the occasional 19th-century and even 18-century European which pops up occasionally. I've had really good luck in building a representative type set of coins from his bulk lots, as well as Mexican and UK coins by date.

My dealer sells 1/2 pound bags for either $3.50 or $3.95, I believe. I dont collect foreign coins, but noticed them sitting right next to the US coin bargain bin.

A guy I frequently buy from at the local coin shows sells me bulk at $5 a pound. He throws everything worth less than a buck into his bulk lots, but no culls are included.

Thanks for all the replies, it gives me a good starting place when setting a price. I will also have to check out local coin dealers to see if they have similar world coin lots for sale.
