I'm not sure exactly what to call this or how it happens. Any info appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Errers and Varietys. That was one of my guesses. Either that or defective planchette or plating. Usually the copper is missing but this looks like it may be an added piece like you suggested

that last image - the one of the edge from the obverse perspective, can you get another edge image from the reverse side perspective?
Also, is the rim/edge broken and a bit opened up?
And is the area of the fields (next to the rim) raised or sucken in?

Thanks Dearborn. Here is an old pic that I took of the edge. It appears to be flush with the fields and not sunken on the edge. I may need to dig this one out to get better pics from the reverse or a better angle

well from the angle on the new image, I would agree with E&V on a copper foil was on the planchet when it was struck.

Thanks Dearborn. I was thinking the same thing but the size has me still wondering. That would be a big piece of foil if that's what it is

Looks to me like the planchet was damaged by a cut of some kind. The edge cut is deeper than just the plating.

Thanks Cujohn. I think it looks like that because the copper is lifting up from the coin and the shadow makes it look like that

Won't comment on something I have little insight on, but interesting thread.

Not yet but I do have a few more pics of the edge. I'll see if any of them show something different otherwise I'll have to take more in the morning. The sun is going down and I won't have natural lighting to take good pics. I'll see what I can come up with in a few minutes
