https://www.ebay.com/itm/404596518940Can someone decipher the grading for me? It seems like the bust is heavily scuffed, and the fields are covered in fine scratches. I actually think they might be die scratches, which of course is not technically as grim as handling scratches. However, it feels a little shocking that this coin graded MS66. Are all those marks just a non-factor if they are part of the die, and therefore part of the striking process?

Die polishing lines, I guess.

That was my first thought Frog, but after looking closer I'm not so sure. At any rate, I would never pay MS-66 money for that coin.

Right, lines across the neck and collar seem unusual, but surely NGC would not have missed these, so beats me.

Does die polishing reach into the bust cavity enough to scuff it like that?
To me, it really just looks like the coin (or the die) was scraped against something there.

A great reason why you should buy the coin, not the holder.
In my opinion the coin would grade AU details, damage.

Looks like scrapes to me. Also, there's a big fingerprint mark, on the reverse.
Errers and Varietys.

Zero eye appeal coin so regardless of the NGC opinion I wouldn't want it in my collection.

looks like this is die related. in any case it occurred prior to strike. would I touch it...nope...never and for sure not for that price.

So to the original question:
Do TPGs just ignore die-related features when grading, even if the features are unsightly?

Quote: Do TPGs just ignore die-related features when grading, even if the features are unsightly? good question. from what I've seen, yes, things like die chips, die polishing lines, Cuds etc

A Very Busy Obverse Jefferson nickel IMO, its grade has Obviously taken the Sweet Die Cleaning Forensic Gouges and Scratches Seen into consideration, Being it all happened at the Mint.... I believe this coin had Serious Clashing on the Obverse, exhibited by the Heavy Grinder Die marks Seen in cleaning the Die. IMO, The Facial Scratches and Hits/Nicks are mostly PMD. Love the Die Gouge Thru the Base of RU in TRUST......
